Our show in Arrecifes Cathedral proved to be quite a challenge for Andre
our Sound Engineer. He had many different challenges; acoustics, sound
reverberations, scenery, lights, - and of course a concern about the
crack in the Cathedral dome above where the performers of the cast of
'My African Dream' would be onstage. Undaunted, Rian Swanepoel and Lois
Du Plessis were available with cast members for a sound check and
rehearsal for Andre to evaluate and adjust accordingly.
The Arrecifes show began with a 50 strong choir from the Municipal Hand
Sign Language School initiated by the Mayor, Dr Carlos Francisco
Angelini, who gave a three song welcome to the visiting South African
Choir. Their performance was outstanding and received resounding
applause from the packed audience.
The 'My African Dream' show was incredible. Even after the show had
started following a brief presentation by Mario Zacarias and Mayor
Angelini, standing space at the back of the Cathedral was at a premium
as word travelled by 'bush telegraph' through the Arrecifean community.
Confidence of the cast beamed from the stage and Lois du Plessis and
Rian Swanepoel's voices echoed from the Cathedral across the town
square, and an incredulous audience sat (and stood) completely
mesmerized. Amid applause, shrieking, whistling, expressions of
wonderment, 'My African Dream' performed two additional encores to a
very content audience, who showed their appreciation with standing
ovations. The show was a complete success and will remain in the hearts
and minds of everyone who had the opportunity to enjoy the spectacle.
Wide media coverage played songs and showed excerpts from the show on
television channels throughout the region, thanks to the wonderful
collaboration of Mario Zacarias.
